Acute mental health and learning disability staffing FAQs
Our mental health nurses work in a variety of acute mental health settings, including:
- NHS trusts
- Private hospitals
- Other healthcare facilities
Our nurses help you deliver excellent healthcare outcomes, ensuring patients receive the best possible care.
Our nurses are highly skilled and trained in a variety of essential areas, including safety interventions such as MAPA and PMVA training. They bring a minimum of 12 months’ experience within the last two years in acute mental health or learning disability settings.
Their expertise extends to physical intervention, nasogastric (NG) tube feeding and de-escalation and breakaway techniques. Additionally, they are proficient in delivering cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and trauma-based therapies. Our nurses also have extensive experience working with individuals with autism, ADHD and complex needs, ensuring comprehensive and compassionate care for all patients.
Our nurses are trained to ensure a smooth and safe transition from hospital to home or another care setting. They work closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualised care plans, assess risks and coordinate with community services. They’re skilled in effective communication, ensuring that patients and their families understand the discharge process and the support available.
If your acute unit has a lot of patients to discharge, we will send our team to you in as little as four hours’ notice.
Yes, all our nurses need to show evidence of safety interventions training, such as Managing Actual or Potential Aggression (MAPA) and Preventing and Managing Violence and Aggression (PMVA). This training is vital to help de-escalate situations where patients have exhibited challenging behaviours or prevent them. These training courses provide nurses with non-restrictive and restrictive techniques to help them handle patients when interventions are necessary.
Our staff are compliant as we maintain robust governance, carry out regular audits and have a dedicated clinical governance team led by our Quality Assurance Director. Thornbury Nursing Services recruits to standards which surpass local regulation and guidelines, meaning we only hire the most qualified staff as only 20% of applicants are accepted. Applications are accepted following a thorough recruitment and vetting process carried out by our team of registered nurses.
We uphold a strong process for handling complaints and incidents, ensuring transparency and informed resolutions by involving our nurses, clients and relevant third parties. These steps help us to consistently meet the highest NHS standards.
