CPD study days
Thornbury Nursing Services offer voluntary study days, regardless of band and qualification. Our aim is to provide our clients with knowledgeable and professional agency workers, which is facilitated by our continuing professional development (CPD) courses and updates.
A range of courses are on offer to help develop your nursing knowledge and clinical skills. These are provided all over England and Wales, at various private and NHS locations.
Here is a summary of just a few voluntary courses and study days that our agency workers can access through us. Our voluntary courses and study days are held in venues in the following locations:

List of courses we run:
PMVA 2-day refresher study day
This 2 day refresher is for both RMNs and Healthcare Assistants working within mental health and psychiatry. Attendees must have previously attended a full or refresher course within the past 12-14 months to enable the refresher training to be fully applicable.
The purpose of this study day is for the attendee to have knowledge and an understanding of:
- Causes of aggressive and challenging behaviour
- Different management strategies for types of behaviours including distraction and diffusion
- Effective use of verbal de-escalation techniques and prevention of physical interventions
- When is physical intervention appropriate, including safe practise and breakaway techniques and the legislation
Catheterisation study day
The purpose of this study day is to prepare nurses to competently undertake catheterisation for male and female patients where indicated. The day will include anatomy and physiology, the indication for its use, advantages and disadvantages of this procedure.
Participants will learn the practical skills needed for inserting urethral catheters and will have the opportunity to use the simulation equipment on the course to practice this skill.
Prior to attending, nurses must have completed the infection control online training – including handwashing techniques, which can be found in the TNS Competency workbook.
Learning outcomes:
- To assist healthcare professionals to develop the underpinning knowledge needed to perform this skill
- Be aware of legal and professional implications
- Understanding and knowledge of infection control
- To competently perform this procedure after completing supervised practice
This one day course is for qualified adult nurses only.
Chemotherapy refresher study day
This is a one day chemotherapy refresher study session. The day will cover:
- Cancer and chemotherapy
- Immunotherapies
- Extravasation, spillage and its management
- AOS
- Guidelines and policies
- Health and safety
This one day course is for qualified chemotherapy nurses only.
Venepuncture and cannulation study day
The purpose of this study day is to prepare nurses to competently undertake venepuncture and intravenous cannulation.
The study day includes instruction and clinical simulation practice and you will be expected to successfully complete competencies within your clinical practice.
Thornbury nurses must have completed the infection control online training to include hand washing technique, which can be found in the TNS competency workbook, prior to attending this training

This one day course is for qualified adult nurses only.
IV Therapy study day
This is a one day session for qualified adult nurses
This study day is designed to educate and update registered nurses in intravenous therapy use. Nurses will examine the principles and practice of IV therapy with an emphasis on safe practice, safe drawing up techniques, communication and documentation. Complications and precautions with this method of therapy will be explored along with nursing responsibilities.
In order to achieve competency the nurse will be required to complete practice under strict supervision in a clinical area. A pre course drug calculation workbook will need to be completed. The outcome of the course is for nurses to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the safe practice of IV therapy and to understand the benefits of using this therapy along with knowledge of the dangers and complications.
