We pride ourselves on being one of the highest-paying nursing agencies
How much do nursing agency jobs pay?
- Location – the pay rate for a nurse in London will differ from a nurse working in Cardiff.
- Specialism – for example, an HCA will earn a different hourly wage compared to an A&E nurse.
- Experience – senior positions will typically earn more than those who are relatively new to nursing.
- Setting – nursing pay rates can vary depending on the client; working in an NHS environment will typically pay differently than working in a private setting such as a care home.
- Time of shift – depending on what time you are required to work, the hourly wage for nursing agency staff can vary significantly, for example working a basic Monday-Friday shift from 8 am-2 pm, you’ll earn less than working over the weekend & through the night.

FAQs about our pay rates
Yes – working through a bank or public holiday means as an agency nurse, you are paid more per hour. Please refer to the table above to see how much you can earn per hour as a nurse working on public holidays.
Working with Thornbury Nursing, you can be paid up to four times a week – once your timesheet is submitted our team work on processing payments to ensure you get paid quickly. Also, we don’t charge any administration fees, meaning you keep as much of your pay as possible.
If you have any questions about your pay, contact our payroll team on 0345 120 5333.
Other nursing agencies may pay via an umbrella company, however at Thornbury Nursing we believe that nurses should get paid the highest amount possible, and in line with HMRC’s regulations regarding tax.
For more information, please read why we pay what we say.
As a PAYE worker, your tax and national insurance contributions are deducted from the pay rates in the table above, meaning that you don’t have to worry about ensuring that these payments are made – you simply receive a payslip as normal.
As an agency nurse, you’re still entitled to holiday pay. We include your holiday pay at 15.56% of your hourly wage.
We pay your travel expenses, at 25p per mile for up to 200 miles, and 30p for each additional mile for journeys over 200 miles.
We will also cover expenses for things like:
- Bridge tolls
- Congestion charges
- Clean air zones
- Public transport costs
We need receipts for all travel costs, and these need to be scanned in and submitted on the same image as your timesheets.
Alongside being committed to paying nurses a higher pay rate, we also offer benefits on all our roles, including:
- Reimbursed travel expenses
