Training and development

Thornbury Nursing provides the highest quality workers to our service users and clients. We do this by ensuring that each and every nurse, midwife, HCA, and ODP meet a very specific recruitment and skills criteria, above and beyond standard expectations.

Competency updates

If you are unable to provide evidence of your competency updates, you are welcome to join the voluntary courses provided by Thornbury. These study days incorporate manual handling, basic paediatric and adult life support, anaphylaxis, and automated external defibrillation. It’s a rolling program that takes place throughout the year and is available at locations across the country.

Evidence of the above competencies is essential to remain compliant with Thornbury and is required to be updated on an annual basis. If you need to provide updated evidence of competency, or would like to discuss available course dates, please call the RTC team. To secure a place on a course, we ask for a deposit to hold your place. This is refundable on confirmation of attendance unless you wish to receive a certificate of attendance.

Online training courses

Need to increase or refresh your current skills and knowledge? Have to take part in training for your revalidation requirements? Don’t have time to attend a classroom study day? We offer voluntary online training via Espirita, our online training platform.

If you are interested in taking part in training courses, please call the RTC team for more information.

Thornbury workers have access to Espirita, an e-learning platform with a large range of online courses, designed and produced by their skilled team and accredited by the CPD Standards Office. Whether you’re looking for a specialist Child Protection course or one of their many CPD-accredited courses such as Radicalisation Awareness, you will be able to find a suitable voluntary course with Espirita.

Contact the RTC team to discuss being enrolled on to the site.

Compliance portal

The compliance portal is a valuable resource for efficiently managing your training needs. It provides a breakdown of all your training items, including their status and how to update them. Additionally, it contains information about upcoming courses available for booking, as well as courses you have already booked.

Here’s what our nurses say:

” The trainer was really good. I liked the booklet we received at the end of the course. I will use this to refresh my memory.” Diolin

“The training was really good and covered lots of topics. The trainer was really approachable, and we felt comfortable asking questions. I learnt a lot.”

“I really enjoyed the course. The trainer explains things really simply so that both nurses and HCAs understand. I was very impressed with the equipment such as the choking doll as I’ve never had a chance to use this before. The trainer is very knowledgeable, and I would definitely recommend the course. I was impressed with the study booklet I received at the end of the day.”

“The course covered a few things that I didn’t previously have any knowledge of. The course is really good for HCAs who may have to deal with someone collapsing in a 1:1 situation.”
