What does a midwife do?

In a midwife job, you are an expert in childbirth. Your role covers providing care and support to women and their families during pregnancy, labour and after the baby has been born. Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing parenting classes
  • Identifying high-risk pregnancies
  • Teaching new mothers how to care for their babies

Depending on whether you are working in a hospital or community setting, your role may slightly differ. Good communication skills are important as a midwife as some women and families you care for could have different circumstances, for example they could be homeless, have disabilities or be from unique cultural backgrounds.
