9 qualities and attributes found in all great nurses

There are many great qualities that nurses possess. We’ve put together a list of the top nine qualities that we see time and time again in our nurses here at Thornbury Nursing. These are qualities that we believe are needed to excel in the profession and they are also attributes that every one of our exceptional nurses possesses.

Caring

Caring for other people is at the very heart of nursing. It is really what the job is all about.

As a nurse, you need to be able to put aside prejudices or the temptation to judge others. It is important to be able to see patients as people who need you to provide them with the right care, consistently, at the right moments in their lives.

Compassionate

Compassionate nursing is about respecting patients while understanding and working with them to help with their pain and troubles. It’s a critical quality in nursing and comes from a natural response to dealing with others’ pain by taking the right steps to help them.

Being able to recognise the needs of patients, and show that you understand them, are qualities that excellent nurses possess.

A good communicator

As a nurse, it is essential that you are able to communicate clearly and honestly, avoiding medical jargon, so patients can share in the decision-making. At each stage of treatment, you need to be able to explain what’s happening and ensure patients understand, thinking carefully about their specific needs.

Agency nurses with Thornbury Nursing also work alongside different healthcare professionals regularly. Good communication skills are necessary in order to be able to share information quickly and effectively with new teams and colleagues.

Courageous

There’s no doubt that, at times, it takes courage to be a nurse. From breaking bad news to patients and their families to challenging wrongdoing, it is a quality that means you will always do the right thing and have the strength to do so, even when it isn’t easy.

When working with a nursing agency like Thornbury Nursing, courage will also help you as you work on new assignments, go to new departments, and work with teams who are long-established.

Committed

Commitment is essential in nurses, as you are required to put patients first in everything that you do. You’ll be there for people throughout their treatment, supporting them, no matter what happens.

It is also important for nurses to be committed to delivering the highest quality of care at all times, ensuring that patients get the care and support that they need, when they need it.

Good stamina

As a nurse, it takes stamina to stay active during long shifts, especially when you’re on your feet for much of the time. The role also demands mental stamina, staying strong, alert, and emotionally resilient.

Adaptable

The health sector is constantly changing in many areas, including technology. Being adaptable will make it easier for you to respond to any updates or changes that are made, quickly and effectively.

Agency nurses working with us also need to be able to adapt to new situations and manage their priorities well, so that they can fit into new work environments and begin delivering quality care right away.

Good time management skills

Our final essential ingredient for great nurses is time management. With it, you are able to prioritise all the jobs you need to do in a day – patient care, teamworking, admin tasks, and family issues.

It can help you to set realistic goals and prepare for each day, as well as ensuring you get enough rest when you’re not at work.
