Becoming a nurse in Cardiff

Education

There are various qualifications you will need to obtain to become a nurse– in many cases, most countries also have a registering body you will need to join to become a fully qualified nurse. In the UK, all nurses have to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Nursing Degree

Many nurses become qualified by completing a university degree – the course should provide you with the skills and aptitude to become a nurse. Many courses need a clinical element to be achieved. This may be in settings such as hospitals, community centres, psychiatric wards, GP practices or another facility. Qualified nurses tend to specialise in one of the four areas of nursing:

  • Adult nursing
  • Mental health nursing
  • Children’s nursing
  • Learning disability nursing

If you would like to study to become a nurse in Cardiff, you can attend Cardiff University. Courses here will be able to provide you with the academic theory of nursing, but also hands-on practical experience in hospitals and community settings. Alternatively, you could also study at some of the most popular universities in Wales, including University of South Wales or Swansea University.

Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeships (RNDA)

Getting a degree isn’t the only route into nursing – many people qualify through Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships (RDNA) as an alternative path. This offers university studying on a part-time basis, whilst most of your training will focus on practicing in placement settings.
